Dr. McKenna is widely considered a friendly and down to earth surgeon. He enjoys getting to know his patients and focusses on having them actively participate in their care. He is dedicated to helping his patients understand and manage their conditions and he takes great pride in being able to participate in their care. He views both his role as a physician, and his relationships with his patients, as a great privilege.
Originally from Kitchener-Waterloo, Dr. McKenna and his wife moved to Owen Sound shortly before the birth of their daughter. They quickly fell in love with the area and its surrounding natural beauty. They have since had a son and have found Owen Sound to be a wonderful place to raise their children. The area has provided them ample opportunity to pursue their hobbies of hiking, canoeing, kayaking and snow shoeing.
Dr. McKenna received his honours bachelor of science degree from the University of Waterloo in the year 2000. He then attended medical school at McMaster University, grauating in 2003. His residency training, at the University of Manitoba, provided him an exposure to all areas of otolaryngology including otology, rhinology, laryngology, facial plastics and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, and head and neck oncology. He graduated, and became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada, in 2008.
Dr. McKenna elected to forego an academic position at the University of Manitoba and instead joined the Department of Surgery at the Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre in Owen Sound in 2008. He has been the Chief of the division of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery since 2013. He is also currently a member of the surgical executive, the bed management physician, and a member of the utilization committee. He is an active member of the OMA, CMA, Doctors Manitoba, the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
In addition to his clinic at The Best You – Owen Sound, Dr. McKenna also works out of the Owen Sound and Southampton hospitals.
